Face It Friday: Periodontal Disease

Treating Periondontal Disease
depends on the type and severity of the disease.  The hygienist will know if you have periodontal disease by examining your gums. The hygienist will probe gently around each tooth between the tooth and gum, to see how big the pocket is. If the pocket is bigger than 3 mm you have Gingivitis. If the pocket is bigger than 4 mm, you have periodontal disease
If the disease or gingivitis is caught very early, the disease may be reversed. When the disease is not treated, the plaque and tarter trap bacteria at the root of the tooth and cause bone loss. When bone loss occurs, the pockets get bigger, allowing more bacteria to be trapped. Which allows more bone loss. We need bone around our teeth to keep them in our mouth. So if we lose the bone around our teeth, we will loose our teeth, if not treated. Not only that, but the bacteria is getting into the bloodstream. This leads to an increased risk for other health problems such as, heart disease, diabetic issues, stroke, lung problems, pre-term births, and other links to disease are being investigated. Your mouth is part of your body. Taking good care of your mouth and making sure it is healthy, will make a difference with your overall health.
