Periodontal Disease
must be treated.
The first step is a special cleaning called scaling and root planing. This cleaning removes plaque and tarter on the tooth and root surfaces, below the gum. A local anesthetic may be given to reduce any discomfort. This helps the gum tissue to heal and the pocket to get smaller and shrink. This procedure makes it more difficult for the plaque to accumulate along the root surfaces. Remember, when the plaque and tarter build up on the root surfaces, they trap bacteria there. This is definately something you don't want to happen. If the plaque and tarter is not cleaned off, bone loss will occur. If left untreated, the patient may lose their teeth. When scaling and root planing is done, medication may be recommended by your dentist. Your dentist may prescribe a mouthrinse, or a localized antibiotic may also be applied to the infected areas. In our office, we have had great success with both. If you haven't seen a dentist for a while, you may have periodontal disease. You need to be proactive with your dental health.
