Face It Friday: Nitrous Oxide!

N 2 O

What is nitrous oxide?:
Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a safe, effective technique to calm a patient during a dental visit. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is a blend of two gases, oxygen and nitrous oxide. When inhaled, it is absorded by the body and has a calming effect. After treatment breathing straight oxygen eliminates nitrous oxide from the body.
How will I feel when breathing nitrous oxide?:
You can choose from a variaty of scented nose pieces with a pleasant aroma. This will help you experience a sense of well-being and relaxation.
How safe is nitrous oxide/oxygen?:
Very safe, unless you are pregnant or have DOPD or any other respiratory problems. Nitrous oxide/oxygen is perhaps the safest sedative in dentistry. It is mild, easily taken, then quickly eliminated by the body. You remain fully conscious and keep all natural reflexes, when breathing nitrous oxide/oxygen.
Will nitrous oxide/oxygen work for everyone?:
Everyone is different. If you feel nervous at the dentist, give it a try and decide for yourself. You will know when you try it, if it is something that helps your experience at the dentist to be as comfortable as it can be.
