Face It Friday: Mouthguards!

What is a mouthguard?
It is a flexible appliance that can protect teeth from injury or trauma while doing sports or other recreational activities. They can even protect your teeth while you sleep!
Why would you want to wear a mouthguard?
A mouthguard can be helpful and good in many different situations. They can be worn when playing sports and also they can be worn at night by people who grind their teeth.
Mouthguards for sports-
Mouthguards are used for football, boxing, hockey, soccer, lacrosse, basketball, skateboarding and many other sports. It is important to encourage young children to wear mouthguards. Teach them from the beginning when they are young and first start a sport, that this is part of the uniform and necessary. Then later on, they will be used to it and hopefully, see the value of it.
Why are Mouthguard so important?
They can protect the mouth from injury, such as broken teeth, or even tooth loss, broken jaw and even hemorrhage. The mouthguard helps protect soft tissue from injury from teeth cutting into your cheeks or bruising the side of the your mouth. Wearing a mouthguard to protect your teeth is alot less expensive that having surgery or repairing broken teeth.
Mouthguards for sleep-
Grinding and clenching at night can cause joint and jaw pain. Many people suffer from headaches due to grinding. Your teeth can actually wear down. TMD (Temporomandibular disorders) can occur as a result of problems with the jaw, jaw joint  and facial muscles (Some people incorrectly call the disorder TMJ, for temporomandibular joint). A mouthguard that is worn at night will protect the teeth from grinding or clenching while you sleep. Also practice breathing and relaxation techniques to help you relax as you sleep.
Mouthguards can be purchased at a drug store or sports equipment store. However the best mouthguard is one that is custom made, to fit in your mouth with your teeth. Your dentist can provide you with a custom mouthguard. They may cost more money, but they are worth it.
