We all love sugary snacks!
They taste so good, but they aren't good for your teeth or your body. They cause cavities! Sugary snacks that have sugar, are made with different kinds of sugar: table sugar and corn sweetners. Besides sugar, starchy foods can also break down into sugars once they're in your mouth.
Did you know that the average American
eats about 147 pounds of sugars a year?
It's not a surprise then that the average 17 year old has at least three decayed teeth! Candy bars and foods such as pizza, breads and hamburger buns, may also contain sugars.
Check your labels!
Keep in mind, brown sugar, honey, molasses and syrups also react with bacteria to produce acids, just like sugar. These foods are also potentially damaging to your teeth. One thing you can do is eat healthy snacks.
Choose sugary snacks less often.
Fruits and nuts are a better choice than snacks full of sugar. Don't drink sugary drinks such as soda pop, and energy drinks, and drink more water and milk. Avoid eating sweets between meals. This allows the sugars and starches to be on your teeth longer. And most importantly, brush your teeth with a fluoride toothpaste after snacks and meals, and floss every day.
